Plastic straws may be small, lightweight and everywhere but they are having a big environmental impact. In the US we get through 500 million of them a day.

The problem is that they can blow out of the garbage and landfills into the Ocean. They’re also not that easy to recycle. Did you know that only about 10% of the plastic we discard is actually recycled? Further, around 8 million tonnes of plastic washes into our oceans every year.

Plastic straws are only a small part of this of course. However given that they are easily now replaced with more environmentally friendly alternatives, the days of the plastic straw appear to be numbered.

The EU is moving to plan single-use plastic by 2021 and even McDonalds is trailing paper straws instead. They may be a small part of the overall problem but this is one we can all do something about.
