Most Interesting Things Moved By Atlas Movers Infographic

most-interesting-things-moved-by-atlas-940

This simple infographic talks about the strangest things moved by Atlas Van Operators. Some of them are strange indeed. They are mostly big things. I think about all the times I have moved, and if I had actually had the foresight to hire movers instead of being convinced that I could move myself, the strange things they would have moved without knowing it, because up until recently all of my strange items were small enough to put in boxes.  I suppose the large bagpipe and flute crest I bought at a rummage sale wouldn’t make these guys bat an eye, or would my globe that opens into a bar.  Everybody has one of those nowadays.  I wonder if they keep CDs in it like I do.  Anyway, I digress…

The infographic tells us that in 2010 Atlas participated in over 100,000 moves in the US and Canada.  That’s a lot of moves.  Normally in one of these posts we break the write-up into sections because today’s infographics are super-complicated, with lots of different types of information, and you have to break up what you write about because otherwise you’d be jumping from subject to subject and it would get crazy.  This infographic is different.  It has a nice blue background shaped like America, and little shadowy Atlas Van Operators moving all sorts of crazy stuff.  Here is the list, numbered like they numbered it, for easy reading.

1. Roy Rogers Freight Train
2. Dinosaur Exhibit
3. Helicopter
4. Stuffed Bear (I’m assuming a real bear, now deceased, and stuffed by a taxidermist)
5. Mini Submarine
6. Phone Booth (why?)
7. 1,000 lb Coffee Roaster (speechless)
8. Suit of Armor (that guy, clearly, was new when he answered this question.  Who hasn’t moved a suit of armor?)
9. Antique Gas Pump (cue the American Pickers)
10. 8 ft. Wooden Camel (like you do)
11. Ice Cream Truck (couldn’t someone have driven it?)
12. Tree Roots
13. Animatronic King Kong
14. Antique Asian Crown
15. Apollo Space Capsule

Design:  C

This is straightforward, clean, and fun to look at.

Information:  C

It is what it is.  It might be nice to see a little explanation about WHY the items were moved, but that would destroy the simplicity of the design.

How to have Jersey Shore Hair

how-to-have-jersey-shore-hair

I have never watched the TV show The Jersey Shore. This has been a conscience choice for two very good reasons. The first reason for not watching The Jersey Shore is because, God forbid, I might actually like it and then I couldn’t feel superior even as I watch my own fair share of craptastic television. The second reason I avoid this show is that I’m sure it would decrease my I.Q. and I do not hold a surplus on the I.Q. market, but I digress…

As mentioned, I don’t partake in the Guido television show, The Jersey Shore, so I cannot reference the accuracy of the information included in this infographic. I can attest to the humor of this design and the data supplied though. Whether or not these hairstyles from the Jersey Shore are mentioned in the show or are labeled by the infographics author is a mystery to me, but that doesn’t make them any less humorous. DJ Pauly D sports the Blow Out hairdo and Ronnie Magro wears the Faux Hawk with pride. Nicole Snooki Plizzi has a hairstyle named after her, I guess, the Snooki Bump while Deena Nicole Cortese is illustrated with simply luscious curls given to her by hair extensions and lots of teasing.

Directions/instructions are given for each hairstyle so you can attempt to copy your favorite Jersey Shore “star”, at least while their 15 minutes of fame is still ticking along. The content is written with a wry sense of humor and most likely any Guido or Guidette reading it might take the content seriously, which is part of the well-done joke. Some highlights read, “hair extensions may not be for everyone,” “spray it with hairspray…5 minutes straight,” and my favorite, “I’m a a Jersey girl, I like big hair!”

The illustrations are wonderful and I’m sure the body styles and clothing choices are a dead-on match for the realty TV stars. Dresses that are too small and too tight with lots of boobage for the ladies, and tight shirts, tank tops, and exposed chests for the guys are standard fare for these Jersey people. Each illustration captures an attitude which matches the character and contain comedic value that is probably lost on the characters themselves, but will resonate with those who watch the show.

I may never watch the show, God willing, but I’m glad I caught the infographic. Playful, instructive and an all around nice job.

The text is a bit hard to read, but worth reading. Everything else was right on track, colors, illustration and theme.

Killing with your iPhone – Assassin Master

iphones-can-kill-infographic

I own and iPhone and have had one for years. I love it for all of the wonderful things it can do. My iPhone does lots of things such as makes calls, take photographs, record my messages, surf the internet, remind me of appointments and many other useful tasks. I feel as if I couldn’t sometimes live without; kind of like an addiction where you reach for it first thing in the morning and put it down on your bed side table at night, or you place it lovingly on the pillow near you and whisper to it, but I digress…

Of course one of the best things to do with your iPhone is play games and that is what this iconographic is really referring to; you can’t really kill someone with your iPhone unless you tried bludgeoning them with the round corners and that would just be really awkward…

But wait! That is exactly what this infographic is telling your to do, although they recommend you drop your iPhone from a tall building to build terminal velocity instead of a brutal strike to the head. They also state this type of iPhone attack probably won’t work.

The iPhone infographic also recommends using the wired ear buds as a garrote to throttle your unsuspecting victim. Seems risky considering the flimsy cord. A more creative method of murder is mentioned; use the iPhone too transmit a signal that only an attack dog could hear and use that to have the dog attack your victim.

Lastly they devise a plan to conduct a lightning strike using the iPhones aerial antenna, but this won’t work with the iPhone 4. So only those who won’t shell out for a new iPhone are vulnerable to this type of attack.

The pitch is for the iPhone App AssassinMaster which can be found for the iPhone and Android phones. A “harmless” app that only visualizes you killing someone. Good fun to be sure.

The copy is very playful and written in a light-hearted manner. Not too long, not to short, just the right length to tell the story and get you to play along. The salesmanship of the piece isn’t heavy-handed and they give you some smirks along the way.

The obvious comic-book stylings are well done and serve the tone of the infographic very well. Colors are bright and effective and support the comic influence wonderfully. The assassin instructor is nicely illustrated, but overused. I would have liked to have seen some different facial expressions. They use the same illustration every time, just reversed in places. The other illustrations are silhouetted outlines and recognizable. But I did like the graphic style of the dog very much and felt it added a fun visual pop!

The kill-shot at the end was a little over the top, but I am squeamish at the sight of blood, so I’m probably in the minority thinking it was overdone. But it falls in line with the rest of the infographic’s tone and design and that is all you can ask for.

Good supporting infographic for a iPhone app that had quality design and sharp writing dead in its sights!

Design: A-

I love comics so I am biased, but a nice job on following the graphic theme. Points off for only one face on the “general.”

Information: A

This infographic really didn’t provide information so much as entertainment. Cleverly written with a soft sell for an iPhone app at the end.

Identify your Annoying Facebook Friends from High School Infographic

Facebook Friend Types Infographic

I’m going to make a very safe assumption that everyone reading this has not only heard of Facebook, but actually uses Facebook. I can also make a probably assumption when I write, you are an active member of the Facebook community, yes? Well, even if you don’t use Facebook, you are probably familiar with how your Mom, or Brother or friends use the privacy-bashing, exhibitionist software tool, but I digress…

The real question this infographic answers is how do you categorize the friends you may have on Facebook and this graphic goes a bit further and classifies your high school classmates. I think you can safely use this as a guide whether you are still in high school or looking to attend your 50th reunion.

The design is very limited, but takes on many of the characteristics of the site is it mocking. I think the blue used by Facebook has been renamed Facebook Blue, or at least it should be. The blue in question has lost its identity to Facebook. But I digress…the choice of colors are smart as is the typeface (at least for the subheads), another homage to Facebook. The problem begins with writing body copy with this typeface. It isn’t an easy to read font choice and it gets even harder when you use ALL CAPS. I assume this choice to use all caps was too help readability on the internet where small type sizes are hard to read. A better choice than all caps would have been another font with a tall x-height which would make readability much better. Okay, before the design Nazis spring upon me, the body coyp is using small caps, which is even worse, in my opinion for readability.

I’m a big fan of simple illustrations. I love artistic masterpieces and realism as much as anyone, but humor often lends itself to simple drawings such as those used here.  Simple shapes, flat colors and white backgrounds enhance each image with quick recognition of the characters profile type, especially meshed with the blue subhead to the right. I would have appreciated some more expressive expressions on the faces as most seem to have a smile and happy countenance.

The content, which is the dominant factor in this funny infographic, really soars. I didn’t LOL (laugh out loud for those of you without a Facebook account) but I did smile a few times and chuckled under my breath, and while I am required to read the entire infographic, I didn’t mind doing so and enjoyed it. My favorites were The Overaccomplished (who you watch with jealousy), The Dreamer (with status updates about his latest gig at Bingo night) and my favorite person to dislike on Facebook and Twitter the TMI Guy (talking about the gas he produces and the girl he claims to have seduced). Not everyone is a winner, you can skip The Girl You Never Talked To, but the rest were worth the time to read.

While the word infographic is getter muddier and muddier; is this really an infographic or a comic, at least we have something to entertain us until it is time to update our Facebook status.

Design: C+

There isn’t much design: box with simple figure and text to the right. But there doesn’t need to be much design. The strength is supposed to be the textual content. People are done okay, but more expression could have made this a much stronger piece.

Content: B+

The content was amusing and the jokes landed most of the time, even if they were a soft landing. Only one was a “swing and a miss” so you can’t criticize but so much. An infographic that makes you laugh is a rarity so congratulations to ClassFinders.com for accomplishing that.

Okay, this isn’t technically an infographic, but it is hilarious. So bear with me as I give you a laugh. The illustration style is rudimentary and the color choices are suspect, but the content is A+. So if you ever want to test your date, I suggest cooking up some corn on the cob and asking her to take this simple corn on the cob eating personality test. You’ll know everything you need to before the last kernel is gone.

Bedroom Endurance Infographic

bedroom-endurance-infographic

Here is an amusing infographic that also provides valuable information. It’s possibly not safe for work though (especially if you work at a grade school), so if you’re reading this blog in an environment not conducive to borderline adult content, don’t say we didn’t warn you. These facts and figures about bedroom endurance, provided by Prezzybox.com, are unique and intriguing, to say the least.

Here’s a stat sure to amaze you: if you slept with ten people per day for sixty years, the total would be 219, 150 people, which is enough to fill Wembley stadium. So, be sure to get on that. Hey, ever wondered who had the most sexual partners in a single day? The record for a woman is 52 and the record for a man is 919. Cue the “The More You Know…” tune.

The graphic goes on to compare the various speeds of different man-made creations, including a city bus, a sneeze, cheese rolling, a dog running, and sperm. A sneeze clocks in as the fastest at 35 miles per hour, but sperm is right on its heels, clocking it at 28 miles per hour. It also has a graph that points out top dads in the world. Frankly, one could probably make an entire graphic on the issue of top dads. Here, the qualification for being a top dad is that you father an extremely high number of children. To summarize:

Indian Farmer Nanu Ram Jogi fathered his 21st child at the age of 90.

Moulay Ismail Ibn Sharif sired 1,042 kids from his 500 wives. He was able to crank out 19 a year. Whew!

The graphic does not note this, but musical great John Sebastain Bach also had several children: 20 to be exact, hence the reason that someone could devote an entire graphic to the issue of “top dads.”

Design: B

The concept of aligning facts and figures on a giant heart with Cupid looking on was interesting. The charts and graphics seemed to mesh well. I think the organization could have been a bit stronger, and ultimately, that’s why I can’t give it an A.

Content: A-

Some very amusing (not to mention unique) stats can be found here! A good job on the part of the creators to do the math to figure out how many people one would sleep with if they slept with 10 a day for a year. A graphic that is both entertaining and filled with essential information really hits the spot. :)

White Van Infographic

whitevanman

Ever wondered why there are so many white vans in England? Ever wondered exactly how many there really are? Well, thank the creators of this very amusing infographic then because you are about to have your questions answered.  There are a whopping 2.5 million white vans in the UK. That means that there is one white van to every 24 people–quite a lot. Now, I’m no statistics expert, but I think it’s safe to say that there is no shortage of them. Ok, so we know they can be found around every street corner of the country, but where, specifically, are they?

Well, according to the graphic, most of them are in Essex, Kent, and Lancashire. Now, given how many white vans there are and how widespread the whole phenomenon has become, you might be surprised to learn that the phrase was coined no earlier than 1997. Sarah Kennedy first uttered the words on BBC Radio 2 in that year. So, what is the average distance driven by a “white van man” over the course of a year in the UK? Like all of these type of stats, the number will likely frighten you. And that number is (drumroll please) 9,426 miles, or, if you haven’t been adequately frightened yet, equivalent to driving around the length of the country 13 and a half times.

White van drivers compose the finest parts of the English population. They are well-read (more than half are regular book worms according to the graphic) and almost never get into an accident (68% of drivers have no insurance claims).

Grading Scorecard

Design: B+

The design here is rather unique and draws you in. While it’s certainly not the most eye-popping graphic we’ve ever showcased here, it holds its own against any of the other graphics on this site.

Content: A

The content was more than solid, with an excellent mix of raw facts that surprise you (such as how many miles the average white van driver spends on the road in a year), and facts that make you chuckle up a storm (such as how many cheesy wotsits could be moved if you had 772 white vans). I lost my turkey strudel after reading that.

Overall, this graphic is certainly at the top of its class.

The Human Tongue Infographic

Filed under: All Infographics, Funny Infographics | 12 Comments »

tongue infographic

The human tongue is perhaps the most interesting body part, right after the femur that is. This graphic displays some of the most zany statistics about not only the human tongue, but the animal tongue as well. What kind of animals? How about the whale? The tongue of a whale weighs a measly 5,400 pounds and is the size of an elephant. That’s really a very scary thought when you think about it. To think that every blue whale out there has an elephant in its mouth? Golly! Ok, enough Leave it to Beaver moments. Let’s get down to business–tongue business.

This graphic is filled with useful tidbits, such as the fact that the idiom “the cat got your tongue” has roots in ancient Assyria. Apparently, in those golden days, conquered soldiers and criminals had their tongues taken out as punishment and fed to the king’s cat. I’m sure all two people who actually use the expression, “cat got your tongue” will be pleased to know that. Then again, they probably already did.

Here’s another gem in the graphic. A series of intense scientific tests on identical twins have shown that the ability to roll one’s tongue into a tube shape is not a genetic trait. Sibling rivalry over tongue matters can now be elevated.

Infographics Scorecard

Design: A

This graphic is one of the most well-designed we’ve ever had on this site. The designer was dealt a difficult set of cards; he was given a topic that’s not necessarily the most interesting to draw and told to make an entire graphic out of it. And the designer delivered, so he should be commended for that. I do have one knock on the design (he was given an A, so the knock isn’t too harsh, but it’s there.) That knock is simply that creative things weren’t done with the tongues. There could have a been a depiction of the tongues dancing to demonstrate their ability to help with singing. Or perhaps, to demonstrate how long the longest tongue in history is, the illustrator could have made a tongue wrap around the entire graphic. So, that’s my one knock. It’s a soft one, but it’s there.

Content: A

I’m awarding an A on the content side as well.  What a stupendous set of facts! A tongue, by its nature, is boring.  So, it would have been easy for the creator to just say, “Darn. I can only find boring facts.  Welp, I suppose I’ll be putting together a boring infographic, as a result.” But the creator did not. He took a potentially boring topic and made it unbelievably entertaining.  And that’s commendable.

Growing up means getting married one day.  And marriage usually brings copious amounts of jewelry into the home.  As a married couple ages, money may become tight, and they may need to sell jewelry in order to make ends meet. Yes, the cycle of life. The video infographic sheds more light on the subject of aging.
